Benefits for Elderly (equilibrium)
Most fractures in the elderly are caused by the loss of
balance due to poor equilibrium and a subsequent fall.
What used to result in a small bruise can be a lot more
serious to an aged body as bones density normally
degenerates with age. Although regular exercise is
considered to prevent falling by maintaining muscle power
and balance it is also essential for functional fitness and
the prevention of most health problems. However, many
elderly or disabled people are unable to exercise
effectively. A specific study was done to investigate the
effects of the Whole Body Vibrations (WBV) in elderly
people. Twenty-one people aged 72-76 years old
attending a health program in their local community were
included in this independent study. Eleven carried out the
exercise (ex.) by a low frequency; oscillation loading
device and the other ten did not. The trial group was
exposed to about 10 mins of the vibrations by standing on
the platform only 3 times a week. Calcaneal bone mineral
density was measured using QUS (aos-100, aloka Japan)-
this is a statical and dynamic balance test. Additionally,
functional fitness tests were performed before and after 6
months on the vibration exercise program. Calcaneal bone
mineral density did not differ between 1st and 2nd
measurement, but balance-function improved significantly
after only 6 months exercise. These results suggest that
WBV can help to prevent falls and subsequent fractures by
improving standing balance in elderly subjects or those
suffering with an equivalent and diminished equilibrium.
Our current Body Soul Vibration Training range are
training platforms which give mechanical oscillations
using different motors and a variety of speeds and
amplitudes to suit our patrons needs please lodge an
inquiry with our customer services staff or your GP for the
best method of speed, position and training schedule for
you.
Vibration Therapy and your Bones
(Osteoporosis)
Bone decalcification (osteoporosis) is one of the biggest
health problems especially in the elderly and women
population, statistically effecting 1 in 10 women. Many
elderly people break their bones more easily when they
fall because of bone decalcification; the hip is the most
notorious in this respect. The onset of osteoporosis is partly
due to a lack of movement, which causes muscles to
gradually weaken, the circulation to diminish and the
bones to be inadequately used. In addition, as a result of
the ageing process, the body produces less hormones such
as testosterone, estrogen and growth hormone. Yet it is
exactly these hormones which play such an important role
in the maintenance of strong bones.
The advice usually given to sufferers of this disease by
medical practitioners is to get more exercise, but that is
difficult when muscles are weak, particularly in the legs.
The plate offers a good alternative to vigorous impact
exercise: through vibration the muscles automatically
become stronger and regain their tone. The circulation
improves because the blood vessels in the legs are wide
open due to the vibration. At the same time, the pulsation
gives a direct stimulus to bone tissue, which in turn
stimulates the production of new bone tissue. Scientific
research shows that vibration training can help against
osteoporosis. Recent findings show that even after only
one vibration treatment, there is an increase in the
hormone testosterone and growth hormone, which are so
essential for strong bones.
Muscle Effects
The effect of vibration results in what scientific literature
calls 'tonic vibration reflex' or 'tvr'. That is a repeated
myotatic reflex or stretch reflex. This means that the
vibrated muscle has to work very hard, while the subject
using the vibration plate does relatively nothing other than
keep their balance on the platform. The effect per
pulsation is like that of the knee jerk reflex. This muscle
activity can be measured by use of electromyography
(emg). For example, in a one repetition maximum effort,
the muscle(s) involved are activated 100% voluntarily.
However with vibration training on the plate the muscles
work at 200 to 300% of this irm activation. This is an ideal
way to train, especially when the muscle do not function
properly as seen in the elderly or people suffering from
circulation issues or stiff muscles as well as those in
rehabilitation after many common sporting injuries.
Research also shows that after vibration training (even just
one session), there is a high excretion of testosterone and
growth hormone. There is also a drop in the stress
hormone - Cortisol. This combination has a favourable
effect on muscle protein synthesis.
Effect of vibration training on hormones:
Testosterone: + 7%
Human growth hormone: + 460%
Cortisol: - 32%
(source: bosco et al 2000)
Increases in testosterone and growth hormone are
important in the functioning of both body and mind. Many
complaints of the elderly can be traced to a decrease in
these hormones. It is essentially these hormones, together
with the female hormone estrogen, which are used to
combat geriatric complaints so that it is possible to still
enjoy life and vitality even when one has reached old
age.
Benefits for skin
Through the use of vibration therapy assistance is given to
the body to release collagen, which firms and tightens the
skin. Most forms of exercise which boasts rapid weight loss
can leave the body with excess (flabby) skin which is
avoided using Body Souls WBV as the extra release of
collagen from vibration training will help keep the skin
tight and firm as you lose weight, Additionally, the steady
extra release of collagen can be used to assist people with
pre-existing loose skin through alternate weight loss
methods or for regular users who just wish to tighten loose
skin from the effects of aging - normally developing
around the face, chin, neck and arms.
Neurotransmitters (Parkinsons / Depression)
Parkinson's disease is an example of a deficiency in
dopamine, which is the reason that l-dopa is given as
medicine. It is also recognized that serotonin plays a role
in our mood, or frame of mind. A shortage of serotonin in
the brain can lead to depression, which is the reason that
Prozac is given as a medicine in order to increase the
serotonin content in the brain. From research, it appears
that vibration training also influences the neurotransmitters
and the way in which they work. Vibration training
increases the serotonin content in the brain, which could
possibly explain why one feels so well after vibration
training.
Blood Circulation
As our bodies age or in most situations when we have an
injury, the first thing your doctor will recommend is to
exercise and maintain good circulation in your body and
specific areas. Vibration therapy is used in many
rehabilitation centres and hospitals to promote just that
purpose. Whilst you may experience a tingling or itchy
sensation in your body from a 10 minute session your body
is rapidly increasing circulation and flushing out toxins and
pollutants from your body.
Blood Vessels
The effect of vibration training on the blood vessels can
clearly be seen and felt. After training, one can often see
that the skin around the areas trained are slightly coloured
pink and one may also experience a slight tingling
sensation. This is a sign that the blood vessels in that area
are wide open. In Germany, the effect of vibration training
is used as therapy for disturbed peripheral circulation,
particularly in the lower legs. This can such as in chronic
venous insufficiency.
Nervous system (MS)
The effect on the muscles is reflexively activated via the
nervous system. With vibration training, it seems as if
pulsations awaken the nerve tract, which could explain the
positive effects of vibration training in partial paralysis. In
fact, good results have been reported in the experimental
treatment of MS patients using vibration training as
therapy.
Cartilage
It is already recognized that intermittent pressure
stimulates optimal functioning of the cartilage. This
causes the synovial fluid to be repeatedly pumped
between the cartilage, just like a sponge which is
constantly squeezed under water. This intermittent
pressure maintains and improves the cartilage function.
